Colombo to Kandy: Where to Stop Along the Way

2 min read

The journey from Colombo to Kandy is more than a transfer between two cities. With the right stops, it can be a comfortable introduction to Sri Lanka’s food, craft traditions and hill-country scenery.

The drive is roughly 115 kilometres, but it is worth allowing around three to four hours before sightseeing stops. Traffic, departure time and the number of people travelling can all change how the day unfolds. Rather than trying to fit in every attraction, choose one worthwhile stop and leave room for a break when you need it.

Ambepussa: A relaxed meal break

If you would like to pause for food, Heritage Ambepussa Rest House is an established stop on the Colombo–Kandy route known for Sri Lankan meals. It gives everyone time to refresh before continuing towards Kandy.

For a family or larger group, a planned meal break can make the journey feel much easier. Check opening arrangements before setting off, particularly if you are travelling on a tight schedule.

Kegalle: Make room for a local experience

Around Kegalle, a stop connected to the area’s pottery tradition can add something more personal to the day. Mologoda is associated with traditional clay pottery and may appeal to travellers who would rather spend a little time discovering a local craft than make a longer sightseeing detour.

This is best planned in advance. Workshop access and the time needed for a visit should be confirmed before it becomes part of your itinerary.

Kadugannawa: Pause before Kandy

As the road climbs towards Kandy, Kadugannawa offers a chance to stop, stretch and enjoy the changing scenery. It can be a short pause rather than a full excursion—especially useful after several hours in the vehicle.

Ask your chauffeur to choose a safe, suitable place to stop. If you have time and an interest in the area’s history, you can discuss whether a longer stop nearby fits your arrival plans.

Which stops should you choose?

The best Colombo-to-Kandy journey is not necessarily the one with the most stops. If you need to reach Kandy for an afternoon check-in, a comfortable meal break may be enough. If you have the whole day, you can make space for a craft visit and a scenic pause.

At GoKonect, we plan the drive around your arrival time, group size and interests—so the journey feels like part of your holiday, not time lost between destinations.
